About
The University of Waikato — Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato

Born at the
University of Waikato.

SYP — Waikato Scientific Instruments

SYP was developed by researchers who spent years deploying undersupported equipment in caves, springs and wetlands around the world. When the right tool didn't exist, we built it — then refined it through hundreds of real field deployments.

"Measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so."

— Galileo Galilei
Dr Adam Hartland
Co-inventor · University of Waikato

Analytical environmental chemist and co-developer of the SYP fluid sampler. Committed to building tools that deliver richer data with less work.

Dr Sebastian Höpker
Co-developer

Co-developer and frequent field user of the SYP. Passionate about practical solutions for environmental monitoring, drawing on extensive field campaign experience.

Doug Hillyer
Commercialisation

Instrumental in commercialising SYP during his time at Waikato Link Ltd, helping bring the instrument from the lab to the global research market.

SYP originated from ideation with Dr Seb Breitenbach (Northumbria University) during project QUEST, whose palaeoclimate expertise was instrumental in shaping the instrument's design.
